Johnny Fry was the first Western rider for the Pony Express. From his humble beginnings in Missouri to his exciting first ride in 1860, Johnny never gave up. Even though he was small for his age, his love for horses helped him become one of the true heroes of the American west. With practice and determination, Johnny learned to ride like the wind.

I loved this story about this historical figure, Johnny Fry, who used his passion to serve others. Also, woven in this story, is the fact that Fry was unusually short which was a bonus to his passion for riding horses fast. I pointed out to my kids that we are all made the way we are for an important purpose, so instead of being unhappy with how we are made, to instead see how we can use it to our benefit. This book is the perfect springboard to such a discussion!

My name is Johnny Fry, and I was always small for my age.
As you can guess, I was picked on by the other boys because I was
short. When my Pa died, my Ma remarried, and that's when I discovered
that I love horses. To find out how I became the first Pony Express rider, you will have to read my book.
Clarissa Willis won a Will Rogers Medallion Award for the best children's picture book
illustrated in 2023. It was an honor to have this book recognized, as it was Clarissa's first biography about a real character in Western lore. It wouldn't be her last; she now has two more biographies published.
